Presse : "The experience of watching the film was like being tickled, gently but steadily, into a state of mounting hysteria. From the get-go, the musical version, which stars a credible Zach Braff (doing Mr. Allen) and a misused Marin Mazzie(doing Norma Desmond), feels more like being head-butted by linebackers. Make that linebackers in blinding sequins." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"Showgirls dressed like frisky tigers shake their moneymakers near the beginning of Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway” — and they’re a symbol, for this musical certainly works its tail off to tickle and delight." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Woody Allen’s adaptation of his 1994 movie checks all the boxes: zingers and puns, slapstick and visual gags, leggy showgirls and tap-dancing chorus boys, hammy stars and lavish set pieces. This is defiantly old-fashioned entertainment, and boy does it hit the spot!" Elisabeth Vincentelli for New York Post

"It's an extremely funny, devilishly entertaining show from start to finish." Robert Feldberg for The Record

"The show is a watered-down champagne cocktail that too seldom gets beyond its recycled jokes and second-hand characterizations to assert an exciting new identity." David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter

"The book (from Woody Allen’s own screenplay for his 1994 film) is feeble on laughs, and certain key performers don’t seem comfortable navigating the earthy comic idiom of burlesque. So, let’s call it close — but no cigar." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaires : Notes: This had begun in 1998 as a Lincoln Center Theatre project staging the one item “Contact”. It was expanded into a full length production and played an off-Broadway venue in October 1999. With a complete sell-out and huge praise, it was re-worked and opened in a full-scale Broadway version in March 2000, running for 1,010 performances and earning Susan Stroman a Tony Award for Best Choreography. The London production ran for six months.

Presse : "When future historians try to find the exact moment at which Broadway finally rose up to grab the musical back from the British, they just may conclude that the revolution began last night. The shot was fired at the Shubert Theater, where a riotously entertaining show called Crazy for You uncorked the American musical's classic blend of music, laughter, dancing, sentiment and showmanship with a freshness and confidence rarely seen during the Cats decade. The miracle has been worked here most ingeniously, though not exclusively, by an extraordinary choreographer named Susan Stroman and the playwright Ken Ludwig." Frank Rich, New York Times

"It is heaven on earth. Everything an American musical comedy should be." The New Yorker

"It's no easy task writing a new book for a half a dozen of the best songs ever written for Broadway, and keeping the style of the song-writers, especially when they happen to be named George and Ira Gerwhin, but that's just what Lend Me A Tenor's Ken Ludwig has done with his newest, Crazy For You, the absolutely smashing, razzle-dazzle musical which opened Wednesday night at the Shubert Theater." CBS-Radio

"The brass and the gold of Broadway are back! Ludwig excels in wonderful vaudeville put-down and shows off his neat timing for comedy. Crazy For You will doubtless have audiences crazy for it through a blissfully indefinite future." The New York Post

"An explosion of joy! Something scrumptious indeed. Things are looking up!" The New York Daily News

"A firecracker of a show! A fizzy new libretto by Ken Ludwig and the choreography of your dreams by Susan Stroman." USA Today

"This show has enough energy to light up Broadway for a decade, and that's how long it may run. Crazy For You is a knockout smash hit." WNYW-New York

"Ken Ludwig delivers surprise after surprise. He has written one of the funniest shows around." The Philadelphia Enquirer

"A Great Broadway Musical! A show to take your kids to. … A show friends come in from out-of-town just to see!" WABC-TV

"Pure Joy! The concept is brilliant." Newsweek

"A knockout smash hit! Great music, witty lyrics … and a nonstop sense of fun." WNYW-TV

"Wow! What at show! It is absolutely fabulous!" WWOR-TV

"Broadway's newest hit! It's terrific!" NBC-TV

"Frantically funny!" Malden Observer

"From screwball start to dreamy finish, "Crazy for You" practically floats over the Kirkwood stage. Under the direction of Michael Hamilton, it makes a delicious close to Stages' 2007 season." Judy Newmark, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Avec : Maureen Lipman (Aunt Eller), Hugh Jackman (Curly), Josefina Gabrielle (Laurey), Jimmy Johnston (Will Parker), Vicki Simon (Ado Annie), Shuler Hensley (Jud Fry), Peter Polycarpou (AH Hakim), Gavin Lee

Presse : MICHAEL COVENEY of THE DAILY MAIL says "A truly great evening."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE of THE TIMES says, "Has there ever been a higher standard of dance in any subsidised theatre? No."
CHARLES SPENCER of THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says "The National has a huge hit on its hands."
MICHAEL COVENEY of THE DAILY MAIL says "A truly great evening, easily the equal of Guys and Dolls and Carousel. Enjoy."
NICOLAS DE JONGH of THE EVENING STANDARD was more luke-warm saying " A rich feast of dream-pie, but not my kind of meal".

Commentaires : With additional funding from Cameron Mackintosh this was a glorious full-scale production, and a sell-out for its National Theatre season, earning the desperately needed money following cuts in the arts grants. Reservations were expressed about whether the subsidised National Theatre should be producing such obviously commercial material, but everyone agreed it was of a standard unlikely to be bettered. Following its sell-out success at the Olivier it was re-staged for a five month run at the Lyceum.

Avec : John McMartin (Shah of Persia), Mandy Patinkin (Eunuch), Kate Baldwin (Mizzi), Shuler Hensley (Baron), George Lee Andrews (Soap Manufacturer), Daniel Marcus (Soap Manufacturer’s Wife), Judy Kaye, Herndon Lackey, Lacey Kohl, Nancy Opel
Commentaires : Based on Joseph Roth’s 1939 novel “The Tale of the 1002 nd Night”, “Paradise Found” was directed by Broadway showbiz-royalty, and included some of the greatest Broadway talents in the cast. Its London fringe debut was planned as a cheaper way of launching a try-out workshop prior to Broadway. It was a much anticipated and eagerly awaited “big” event. But that event turned out to be a huge flop, “an absolute stinker”.
Commentaires longs: The plot itself was a “pastiche of unbelievable coarseness and vulgarity” and the lyrics attached to Johann Strauss melodies were decried as abysmal - especially the song where the Baron and Mizzi jointly sing “ I’m Feeling Yours { boom-boom, boom-boom } and You’re Feeling Mine {boom-boom,boom-boom }” to the tune of the Blue Danube Waltz ! The critics, aghast at such a total mess, could not believe how such names as Hal Prince, Susan Stroman and Mandy Patinkin could ever have agreed to work on such rubbish.

Prince of Broadway (2017-08-Samuel J Friedman Theatre-Broadway)

Commentaires : No career on the Broadway stage can quite match up to Harold Prince's. With a record number of 21 Tony Awards under his belt, the acclaimed Broadway director and producer is celebrated in this Broadway premiere courtesy of the Manhattan Theatre Club. Hal truly is the Prince of Broadway!

The musical revue, which first premiered in Japan in 2015, brings together the crème de la crème of Broadway talent, re-imagining the classics that Mr. Prince brought to life over six decades of his illustrious career. It has been common practice in the music industry for decades for recording artists who have enjoyed enough longevity in the business to release “Greatest Hits” albums. After all, if you release enough studio albums, you’re bound to have enough beloved hits on there to justify the project. Well, now acclaimed Broadway director and producer Harold Prince is getting in on the act and has compiled a musical revue of theatrical gems from his unprecedented stage career.

With a cast of nine, comprised of musical theatre veterans and rising stars, each of them (whether male or female) takes a turn at breaking the fourth wall and speaking to us in Mr. Prince’s own words. They deliver insider anecdotes about his career choices as if they were channelling his spirit, signified all the while by them grasping Prince’s signature glasses in their hand or characteristically balancing them on top of their heads. These interludes sporadically appear between musical numbers that have become iconic and eternal in Broadway history.

Directed by Prince himself, with choreography and co-direction from fellow Broadway favorite Susan Stroman (a five-time Tony Award winner in her own right), the revue attempts to break away from the notion of being self-aggrandizing in that the cast members (as Prince) frequently remind us of the number of flops and negative reviews the director/producer has endured over the years. Indeed, at the beginning of the show an onslaught of show titles are projected onto the stage one after another as a kind of larger-than-life résumé and perhaps only the most ardent of Broadway aficionados would be comfortably familiar with every single title. But, of course, the household names are all there in all their shining glory and it is these that provide the musical content for this nostalgic evening of celebration.

The overture alone makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, beautifully arranged by Jason Robert Brown (who also provides the original song “Do the Work” for the curtain call). He has intricately woven together an exhilarating, musical patchwork quilt of all the standards we are about to experience (again), before we strap ourselves in for a rollercoaster ride through the decades. From West Side Story to She Loves Me, from Sondheim classics such as Follies, Company and Sweeney Todd to Lloyd Webber behemoths like Evita and The Phantom of the Opera, Hal has collaborated with them all... even Kander & Ebb are gloriously showcased here by Cabaret and Kiss of the Spiderwoman. The list goes on...

Highlights of the show include a heart-wrenching rendition of “Send in the Clowns” from A Little Night Music by Emily Skinner and Bryonha Marie Parham’s show-stopping take on the title song from Cabaret, whilst Chuck Cooper gives a joyously playful version of Fiddler on the Roof’s “If I Were a Rich Man” and Michael Xavier hits it out of the park with “Being Alive” from Company. And Tony Award nominee Tony Yazbeck, who once again proves he belongs to the tap-dancing elite during “The Right Girl” from Follies.
Presse : "The frilly candy-box sampler... Is a name — even one as perfumed with success and creativity as Harold Prince — enough to hold together a show whose point of view seems to begin and end with the royal epithet of its title? Watching this production’s overtaxed ensemble perform vignettes from different musicals, in an oppressive succession of themed wigs and costumes, is like hearing a rushed raconteur drop name after famous name, without bothering to explain their significance." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"You couldn’t wish for a more ideal place than Broadway to honor Prince. But you could wish for a better, more illuminating show in which to do it... One can’t helped but be impressed by the scope and breadth — but at the same time feel left in the dark about Prince’s precise contributions." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"It’s a pleasant collection of beloved and familiar Broadway songs, but there isn’t much to it." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"An entertaining compilation, despite the shortage of context." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"A sumptuous revue celebrating the 60-plus-years of legendary director-producer Harold Prince’s fabulous career. Watching the hits flash by, like diamonds on a necklace, is sure to make you cry – with tears of joy if you saw that particular show, and tears of regret if you missed it." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaires : Originally the hugely successful Mel Brooks 1968 film, this musical version opened on Broadway in April 2001 to massive acclaim, winning 12 Tony Awards, becoming the first Broadway show to take $1 million a week at the box office. It ran for 2,502 performances. The original much-acclaimed stars were Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. In due course British actor Henry Goodman replaced Nathan Lane and Steven Weber replaced Matthew Broderick, but Henry Goodman lasted just 30 performances before being replaced by Brad Oscar. The London production originally announced Richard Dreyfuss as Bialystock, but he dropped out a week before opening night and Nathan Lane rushed in to take over (at a fee of £39,000 per week!) until January, after which he was replaced with Brad Oscar.
Commentaires longs: With just two exceptions, the London critics fell over themselves with the most lavish praise and every superlative they could muster. There was delight in the fact that, at last, London had a musical “comedy” - no more gloomy revolutions, dubious South American political figures, wars in the Far East or disfigured recluses in opera houses - this was glorious, unadulterated, politically incorrect, fall-off-your-seat with laughter hilarity of the highest order. (The two exceptions found a musical about Hitler and jokes about Jewish producers and gay directors to be distasteful.) The show ran for just over two years, during which time cast replacements for Bialystock included Fred Applegate and Cory English, and for Bloom - John Gordon Sinclair and Reece Shearsmith.
Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "A Spiffing knockabout musical comedy"
PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Unleashes an epidemic of bliss."
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Intoxicating, time-suspending and slightly guilty pleasure."
CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "From the opening number, the audience rides a tidal wave of pure pleasure and after three delirious hours one is left stunned by a combination of unstoppable laughter and sheer happiness."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Mel Brooks, has transformed his celebrated movie into a musical comedy, and as funny a one as I’ve seen."

Commentaires longs: 30 protestors from The Freedom Party, a black and Latino political group concerned about historical marginalization and racism, protested the show at the Lyceum Theatre on 11/6/2010. "This racist play has reduced the tragedy of the Scottsboro Boys case to a Step n Fetchit comedic, minstrel exhibition," according to a statement from the group. "It is this type of attack on our culture and history which makes the Freedom Party absolutely necessary." / The closing night performance was interrupted repeatedly by thunderous applause. Before the performance started, composer John Kander received a standing ovation when he entered the auditorium.

Commentaires : Au départ jusqu'au 23 novembre. Vu le succès, prolongé jusqu'au 21 décembre.
Presse : "The production knocked me for six. I couldn’t speak as I sat in my seat, weeping, furious at the injustices those nine young boys had endured. One of the most stunning pieces of theatre I have ever seen"
Baz Bamigboye, Daily Mail (22/2/13)

"A thrillingly inventive and entertaining night at the theatre. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be moved... Kander and Ebb have given American musical theatre an undisputable, stone-cold classic"

Commentaires : Transfert dans le West End de la version jouée au Young Vic.
Presse : "The score doesn’t have the earworm catchiness of Kander and Ebb’s best shows, and dazzles more than it delights. But this is a genuinely radical musical, full of stinging indignation and plaintive power." Lyn Gardner for The Guardian

"Audacious and troubling, it is delivered with brilliant precision here. Tap-dancing through a number about the electric chair, harmonising in a spiritual that slips in a line about lynching, the cast perform with tremendous verve and handle Stroman’s choreography with split-second timing." Sarah Hemming for The Financial Times

"This is a hurtling journey into hell; I urge you to buy a ticket. John Kander and Fred Ebb’s 2010 musical, seen at the Young Vic last year, is a shocking experience — the more so because it is also irresistibly entertaining." Sam Marlowe for The Times

"The music is magnificent, a stirring, period-specific mixture of gospel, jazz and vaudeville. The plaintive lament Go Back Home is especially memorable, but on the whole the songs are jovial and up-tempo in a deliberate undercutting of the seriousness of the storyline." Fiona Mountford for The Evening Standard
